The lion is different than any other animal. Unlike other animals, we cannot draw portrait of a lion in keeping the pretty animal open before our eyes. Take care to draw the lines bolder, as it would give strength to the drawing. The upper jaw of a lion looks always puffy and the lower jaw flat. the nose line would always be straight, coming downward. The nose-line should look beginning from the center of the eyes.

Other things would be as usual as in the case of drawing other animals. You should draw the shadow of nose-tip on the opposite side from which the light is falling on the face.

Charcoal is one of the oldest medium of drawing. The beginners would be greatly helped if they use charcoal sticks for learning the drawing. We can have the charcoal in two forms: it is available in powder form that is useful in shading the broader areas; and the pencil form. The charcoal pencils are made by using gum as a binding.

Tonal Values of Charcoal

When we need to so a drawing that needs much shading, charcoal is the best option compared to the graphite pencil. Having nice tonal capabilities, charcoal would help us creating tones, from the darkest to the lightest shade.

Special Uses of Charcoal

Unlike graphite, the charcoal is dry and would not stick on the paper. We can erase it just by rubbing with fingers. However care must be taken while rubbing, lest it put some black spots on the paper. Charcoal is known as first and the best friend of an artist, as it offers a huge variety of drawing treatments. You can use this medium to make out a natural looking portrait. By using the sides of charcoal stick with the combination of the texture of the paper, you can create a structural drawing. The artists are at their best when they use the charcoal with lively strokes for depicting an expression on the paper. Drawing with Charcoal Pencils

Portrait painting or portrait drawing is a genre of painting and drawing. Here the artists intend to depict visual appearance of the subject or the person whose portrait is to be made. Here are a few basic rules to observe while portraying.

While looking first time at the face you are going to draw, you should carefully observe the geometrical proportions of different parts of the face, the parts that comprise a human face: the eyes, the nose, the lips, and hair.

The Basics: It would be important to find out the rhythm of the pose of the person being portrayed. First of all we should draw the figure in faint lines, so that we can change it at any time afterwards. Moreover there are certain tiny aspects to remember. the artists would not miss to mark difference in size and shape of upper and lower eyelid. Mark carefully how the upper eyelid covers portion of the whole eye. That would be your first act to draw the eyes; after that start drawing iris and then sketch out eyelids around it.

The Details: It is a common belief that both the eyes of a person are similar in size and shape. However that may not be true in everyone’s case. Our eyes are not the mirror image of each other. Moreover the shape of an eye varies with movement of eyelids. The wind also effects the position of eyelids and the shape of the eyes. So while drawing the eyes, you are to keep several aspects in mind.

The Tools: The first and most important step for doing an artistic pencil drawing is to control of pencil. You should have full control over the movements of your pencil. Make it sure that every mark you are putting on paper leads you to the final and fine work of pencil drawing. You can use the tip of your pencil or the sides of the pencil as the per your wish to animate your image on the paper. However at this stage we would not engage ourselves in the detailed aspects of eyes, like shading and other things. That can be taken care of after the whole face is drawn. Once the eyes are drawn as above, you can proceed further.

How to Draw Nose and Mouth

In this stage of portrait drawing, we shall discuss how to progress on the face where eyes are already located and nearly drawn. The drawing of nose and mouth would be our next agenda.

NOSE: if we look at nose of a person, we can see that it looks like a series of curves. Thus there will be less straight-line work here. But you can proceed by drawing two nostrils as they look from a distance. Marking of the main nose-line would define the shape of nose helping to make the whole face identifiable. Here the nose lines should be drawn by giving less pressure on tip of your pencil, as you would require these lines to wither away while applying final shading.

MOUTH: The next step will be to mark the space for mouth. This feature, the drawing of mouth, would make the whole face immediately identifiable. So it would be prudent to concentrate while drawing the lines for mouth. You can start here just by drawing a delicate line where two lips meet. Mouth comprises two lips, and the upper lips tend to be very different from person to person. Look out for the exact shape of the upper lip of the person you are making portrait. The lower one would be easier then. It would be slightly bigger in size than the upper lip. Keenly observe the creases and the stretches visible on the lower lip; draw the same giving slight pressure on the tip of your pencil. Here you should not worry about the detailed texture of mouth, as you can take care of it in final stage of shading.

How to Draw Face, Ears, Chin and Hair

Now you can proceed on to draw the whole portrait. The residual features of the portrait are to be inserted into the frame. Here you will consider the shape of the ears, the chin, and the hair.

Drawing Hair: Starting from the hair you can slip down up to the shoulders. If the person portrayed has long hair; then make it sure about the position of the hair. It would be advisable to decide whether you are to arrange some hair on one of the shoulders or not. It depends up on the choice of the person whose portrait you are making. The hair lines can be straight or curly, as the case may be. If some hair is drawn on one of the shoulders, especially the right one, it would create a strong visual effect.

Here you are to take care about the measurements of all the features of the face. This stage would finalize the outer boundaries of the portrait; and after doing that it would be difficult to change a major part of the face. Once you have done the complete outline of the portrait, just try putting some line drawing work on the head area and the hair falling on the shoulder. From this stage you are going to final drawing of the portrait, as now onward you would require making the portrait more identifiable and more realistic one.

Here in this final stage, you are to rectify whatever you find not proper. You can alter some of the lining of add a patch of shading here of one more stroke there. But this is the stage that can make or break your whole portrait. It may render your entire labour till the moment a gone case. So to be extra careful here is the mantra.

In an ordinary sense the drawing is over here. But an artist hear would not stop thinking ahead. For an artist, it is important to know about when and where to stop drawing further.

But an artist would apply here his or her intuition. You can proceed further, guided by your intuition. Here you can think about giving more effects to the light falling on the face or shoulders or anywhere on the portrayed area. In enthusiasm, one might make the edges of face harder or the nostrils more darkish. So beware of the overworking.

Your Hands: When you start shading the portrait, you swill have to look at your hands also, as there is every possibility of the lead powder making your hands or fingers dirty. If by mistake this dirty finger is put on the drawing, it can spoil your whole work of the portrait drawing here. Care should be also taken to not to allow the lead power on the face of paper while doing the actual work like shading. You can avoid this by extra care. Better would be to start shading work from the top and go downwards.

It is universal rule that an artist heart would never feel satisfied with his or her work. So the artist would not declare the work as finished. But here the act of a prudent person should prevail. In some cases it would be better to frame the work immediately or deliver the same to the person who has commissioned the work.

Portrait drawing is a low cost hobby; any one can afford it, as it does not put much weight on your purse. But it can be an exciting and rewarding career, if you want to convert it in that way. It is very much interesting because it gives a budding artist the freedom to draw anybody’s face, may it be your close friend or a celebrity. You can draw with the help of photographs, too. Though the portrait drawing or painting is not an easy venture, the level of patience, time allocated to it and constant effort will pay a rich dividend.

Tip for Portrait Making

While making a portrait of a person sitting before us or from his or her photograph, you should keep big mirrors behind you and the subject, so that you can see the person being portrayed and the portrait you are making at the same time. It is good for comparing the work every moment.

It is believed that behind progress of a man, there is helping hand of one woman. This saying is quite correct in the case of Saint Ramakrishna of India. Holy Mother Sharadamani was his wife. She lived throughout her life as his spiritual counterpart and active supporter of missionary activities. Honouring the responsibilities of her household, she had been partner to her husband in his monastic way of life. Here is her pencil portrait done by a Bengali artist Saptarshi Ghosh. the artist has marvelously drawn two major factors of her personality: the divinity and simplicity.

Early Life

Daughter of farmer parents, she was born in 1853. As it was tradition in India, her betrothal was arranged with Ramakrishna at the age of five only, who was of the age of 23 years at that time. Her parents were poor and pious. They believed that the daughter born to them was incarnation of some divine being. Sharadamani Devi had given ample evidences of her being so divine. She had started doing meditation when other girls of her age would be playing with other children.

Worshiping Kali

Kali is regarded as the greatest divine force in Hindu scriptures. Worshipping Goddess Kali had been routine of Sharadamani from her early age. Ramakrishna was priest at the temple of Goddess Kali in Calcutta. He had vowed to practice austerity for whole life. But Sharadamani Devi was pleased to have a divine person like him as husband.

Divine and Sexless Marriage

The couple lived their entire life without entering into any corporeal act. They believed in the austerity of life and they lived the same. According to their disciples, the couple wanted to show the example of a married life that was lived without sex. By passing of the time, Ramakrishna had become a saintly figure. He had a large group of followers. But he always said that Sharadamani Devi was his first disciple. At later age when Ramakrishna suffered from throat cancer, Sharadamani Devi became his devoted nurse and tried her best to reduce his pain.

The Missionary Work

Ramakrishna passed away in the year 1886. Holy Mother carried on the missionary work started by him. She led and encouraged the group of disciples for next thirty years. Among other followers of her husband, Swami Vivekananda was a favourite disciple.

The divine lady, worshiped as Holy Mother, died on twentieth July, 1920. The followers of Ramakrishna do make a very large group in the present time. They do worship of Goddess Kali and engage themselves in social work like impart education in remote areas and helping poor people. I have written about figurative painting, about painting unclothed bodies of male and female. I have also risked painting female body in her natural beauty, too. But I had never thought about writing on a subject like ‘drawing bare breasts of a woman’.

Details of A Woman Reading

While meeting many artists and students who face problems in figure drawing, we would find it necessary to let them know how the breasts of a woman could be drawn. As our psychology works in a certain manner, we draw and paint figures as we think about the same. Before taking pencil in hand or putting colours on canvas, we conceive a shape in our mind and then proceed. So we draw the thighs of women with extra pads of fat; we draw the female breasts looking like balloons. That is what we generally believe and do. Here are echnical details an artist must keep in mind while drawing human figure in general and breasts of a woman in particular.

How to Decide Location of Female Breasts

Breasts are the biggest identifying parts of body of a woman. If we draw a strait line in the middle of chest of a woman, the breasts would be located at 45 degree angles from the said line. Were we to draw the woman from the front side, both the breasts would take almost identical shape. The shapes can vary from perfect round to oval; the position of the breasts could be tight to the hanging downward. If the breasts are to draw round, then the nipples would be placed in the centres of the breasts.

How to do Pencil Shading of Female Breasts

Once the drawing to shape out the breasts is done, the shading part could be done into the marked area. In shading the breasts of a woman we should follow the curves of left and right breasts differently. The shading of the left breasts should be done by left to right strokes. The shading would become less and less dark while going to the spot of nipple. The nipple should be shaded with 4B pencil or applying more pressure on the tip of pencil. The shading of right breast should be done by right to left strokes. Ensure that the strokes are done from upward to downward. Pencil shading done in this manner would bring out the shapes of both the breasts.

Drawing Different Types of Breasts

Technique of shading and applying the idea of shapes of the breasts of a woman is very much demanding. It is because there would be different types of breasts, which would require specific changes in drawing and shading technique. According to the shape and the volume they carry, the female breasts are classified in different types.

SEEING THE SHAPES : Basically the visual art is matter of seeing. So an artist has to see very well the object to be drawn or painted. You can start drawing after getting exact idea of shapes.

THE LIGHT EFFECT : The intensity of light falling on an object indicates the areas of your operation. The light decides where to move your pencil or brush. A good drawing would have the full range of the values, meaning all types of shades should be depicted as per their values.

THE MATERIALS : If the paper is pale, that would not do well either. Smoother the surface of the paper, it would not allow the pencil to put right amount of particles on it. KNOW ABOUT SHADING : For showing contrast of light the skilful use of pencil is required. In pencil drawing, the shading work is an aspect that could extract the best from an artist. Balanced shading of pencil would create an image as beautiful as we would have in other mediums like watercolour and oil colour. Colours have different tonal values. Shading in pencil drawing is just like putting different tonal values of these colours shown in black and white form. By selecting a proper colour and then applying the same in different tonal values, an artist recreates his or her mental images on canvas or on paper.

DEVELOPING YOUR OWN STYLE : It is a great experience to look at master artists’ work. It is pleasure to follow the basics of drawing and painting they apply doing their masterpieces. But to copy a style of painting or drawing of one of them would not be a great idea. Instead you should develop your own style. And it is not so difficult. Your painting or drawing need not like to Picasso or Renoir; your colours may not be skillfully placed on canvas as Van Gogh did. But you have your own caliber and instinct. Follow that instinct. You style would be unique as your handwriting.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, AND PRACTICE : Whenever you get chance to see or hear any interview given by a renowned artist just concentrate on that; hear him or her. How To Start Sketching

The difficulties lie here only. An artists holding pencil in hand and sitting with a blank paper before eyes would find like standing on a last rock from were the valley starts; no road going ahead. Believe me; I had the same experience of fear. But now I own a full big box of the sketches I had done on paper, book pages, and on the reverse side of tickets of film shows. Do keep one thing in mind while doing sketch of any object or a scene: do not leave it incomplete. Do it full; and do it with the same feeling you are going through at the moment. That is the real purpose of the art of sketching. And remember one important aspect: sketching is just a record of an idea that you would be translating into a painting in future.

Skill of Sketching

The art of sketching is a skill that can be developed. It would equip you in recording your immediate response to the surrounding. Process of going on in this field could enhance the level of confidence for learning more about the art of drawing and painting further. A good sketch would lead to a better pencil drawing a perfect painting, may it be in water colour or oil. Sketching From Photographs

Many artists have put forward mixed views about making sketches from photographs. Some believe that the photos we have taken are just like sketches in different form. There are artists who think that while doing painting on the basis of photos, one would tend to copy the exact details s/he would see in it and would render the artwork into one more copy of that photo only. But in reality the things are very different now.

The artists of renaissance period have also used preparatory works as a tool while doing their final work. The artist like Vermeer had also recognized the importance of the photographs of objects to be painted. To minimise the risk of making just a copy of a photo, an artist should make out several sketches of the objects or the scene depicted in a photo. That would give the feel of being artistically present in the scene.

My Experiments With Pencil Drawing

Those were the days when I was sincerely trying to come out of my marvelous ignorance about the art of painting. I turned down the reference sections of a library. It was not the case that the librarian was my friend or an art lover. He simply wanted to dust some books without making a payment. I my new-born curiosity about books of painting fitted well in his scheme. I cleared the dust from almost three hundred books, out of which I had read fifty at least.

Finally I decided to meet those who have practical knowledge of the art. Had I met the art teachers? No. Sorry. I did not take that long circuitous route that leads nowhere. But one of the artists I met satisfied my curiosity in a strange manner. I asked what I should do for becoming an artist. “You are like a barren land,” he looked at the sky and started addressing me. “Till the land first… and then pour water on it for a time. Thereafter plant some good seeds of imaginations, and the flowers would be blooming in due course.”

I asked him about how I should start. “Purchase the ploughs. For tilling the barren land, a good set of ploughs are required. By ploughs, I mean the pencils. Start the journey from Pencil drawing.” Yes, before becoming an artist, the gentleman was a farmer. But I followed his advice in spirit, and not in letters. For two weeks no noticeable change was there. But thereafter the things started to change. The forms became identifiable, the shading looked convincing. Even the flat drawings seemed becoming three dimensional and the thin figures on my drawing papers were on the track of being voluminous.

Thus I had entered the field of pencil drawing. For an artist, the pencil drawing is a medium that could be used at its best with ease. For me it is a matter of convenience. I had cultivated a working relationship with the slim rod of graphite fitted within a wooden cylinder. I keep one pencil, sharpened at both the ends, and a small notebook in my pocket. And I would not miss a chance to draw a beautiful scene or an object I find interesting.

Figurative Drawing: Working on the pencil drawing that is given here is just like to walk on a beach and draw with full of pleasure. To draw a sketch of this woman would not take much time. Once you have seen the woman in her bathing suit or in trendy swim suit, you can do it with pleasant ease. You would need time to complete it in perfecting the lines and doing required shading work. When the woman's body is unclothed, take extra care in shading the lighted parts.

Sketch: the sketch of a woman's drawing comprises certain defining lines. You are to draw a quick sketch of all you see with your eyes. It is not necessary to go in details at this stage. The sketching is for the guideline that you would need while preparing a final portrait. It seen that newbie artists are very much enthusiast in drawing subtle details of shading; and in the process they lose the big picture. While sketching, just use different lines for lighter and darker portions of the body. This can be done by applying less or more pressure on the pencil. At this stage we have to capture a familiar look in her eyes, a characteristic and emotion she has; and we must notice how she feels being so unclothed or partly clothed. This would help us making her portrait more near to the reality.

Drawing: If the person whose portrait you are making is not present, you can use that sketch. First of all imagine the body of the woman without clothes in parts. Imagine about her bare body parts, like her head and shoulder, her upper body, her hips and her legs. This roughly done four section would help you to proceed further. There after insert the curvy lines, especially on the part of chest, sides, and the hips of the young woman. You should have image shown in right side here. Shading: Believe it that the shading is not so difficult job. It is relatively simple. You can think about the light and shadows. The shadows are to be shaded. Do like this: hair are to be shaded dark; the face would be lighted on one side and in shadow on the another; shading to be done under the nose and mouth; careful shading is required to show two lips differently. If the figure is drawn from behind, one hip would require shading.

Drawing a Woman Wearing No Clothes: If a woman's body being portrayed is unclothed, you would take extra care in shading the parts of her figure where the light falls less. The drawing and shadings of buttocks, thighs, legs, and breasts are the important factors while making pencil portrait of a woman wearing no clothes. Drawing of colourful bikini, a designer's thong or a new swimsuit would provide extra experience. However, if the woman is sitting before you keeping her front side before your eyes, the concept of drawing would change and drawing of subtle curves would take lead over the lines.
